Apple iPhone 3G - UK Launch

The much anticipated UK launch of the Apple iPhone 3G which has been billed as a “cheaper 3G iPhone” (Source BBC “Apple announces Cheaper 3G iPhone”), takes place this week, on July 11th 2008, with limited stocks looking likely to be obliterated very quickly.

In the States, the new iPhone retailed at just $199 (approximately £100) - which represents a huge saving on its predecessor - for a phone which works on the faster 3G network.

What the 3G iPhone represents is a much quicker download time for those users who wish to download content. The new iPhone also comes equipped with GPS technology to enable more services based on the locale of the user.

With O2, who have the iPhone contract in the UK, set to offer this new Apple 3G iPhone for free on some contracts (suggested to be those over £45 per month), it looks likely that this phone will sell out completely. Indeed, O2 iPhone stocks have currently run dry, and an announcement is expected on 10 July as to stock levels of both the original iPhone and this new 3G model.

Apple iPhone 3GA replacement for the iPod?

Several commentators have been disenchanted with the iPhone’s seeming lack of capacity, however, and suggest that its lower capacity does not make it a good replacement for the iPod as a music playing and entertainment device. What is clear, though, is that the iPhone does go a good way to providing all the services you might need on the move in one handy size.

With a boatload of features, and an army of willing Apple followers, this lower-priced next generation of iPhones could well be the phenomenon of this year…

Only time will tell.
